For most Filipinos, being an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) is a promise of good life. You got to earn more than what you can earn abroad and you are now able to provide a better future for your family.
On the other hand, not everyone is aware that working abroad is not easy especially for those who work as domestic helpers. We often hear countless maltreatment, abuse, and non-payment of salaries to some.
Just like what happened to this OFW named Abella Dumawat, 41 years old from Urdaneta, Pangasinan. She suddenly goes home to the Philippines because Abella was forced to leave by her employer in Bahrain. They were still eating their lunch then when all of a sudden Abella was told that her flight will be at three o’clock in the afternoon. The OFW had no other choice as she was pulled out of the house, into the car and was driven headed straight to the airport.
Abella also said that her female employer often got into jealous rages and would accuse her of having an affair with her male employer. This may be why she kicked out of their house.
This OFW was not able to bring her things with her, all she had were the clothes on her back. Her employer did not give her even a single cent. Abella began crying as she told her story to her co-passengers in the plane ride.
Abella’s co-passengers helped her, knowing she has nothing, not even a single cent. One passenger offered to give her his excess money. Some were also able to help her by giving some of their extra money since she had nothing with her.
